Improving locality of an object store working in a Fog environment

Abstract : Cloud Computing infrastructures cannot satisfy the constraints of IoT devices, especially in terms of latency and reactivity. Fog Computing has been proposed as alternative and consists of deploying small data-centers geographically spread at the edge of the network, close to the devices. In this context, we focus on how to provide a seamless storage experience towards the different sites. We proposed to deploy Interplanetary Object Store (IPFS) in a Fog environment because it enables IoT devices to write locally on their closest site but it also relocates automatically the objects on the sites they are requested, leading to low access times. We proposed to improve the system by adding a Scale-Out NAS on each site but also by storing location of objects in a tree. We evaluated these improvements on the Grid'5000 platform but we now want to evaluate them in a more realistic environment composed of IoT devices deployed on FIT/IoT-lab and Fog nodes deployed on Grid'5000. In this paper, we present our attempt of using the two platforms simultaneously as well as the problems we encountered to interconnect them.
