Chaotic characteristic of a linear oscillator coupled with vibro-impact nonlinear energy sink

Abstract : The chaotic characteristic of a system with vibro-impact nonlinear energy sink is studied here. An analytical method is developed to calculate Lyapunov exponent. The mechanism by which impact results in chaos is further clarified rather than only by the calculation of Lyapunov exponent. In addition, an approach to identifying Lyapunov exponents from experimental data is proposed, and the estimated results are consistent with numerical results.
