Following One's Nose: Olfaction in Faulkner's Fiction

Résumé

This essay bears on the role and importance of smell in the work of an author whose universe has been so far closely associated with sight. Smell has seldom been taken into consideration by literary critics and the reason for this unfortunate sin of omission lies in the refusal to consider it as an instrument of knowledge. Taking the opposite view, this critic, following his nose or the “way of scent”, reveals and – unquestionably – proves the paramount importance of olfaction in Faulkner’s fiction where smells and scents pervade his literary domain.
