Simon de Tournai : la rumeur et la légende

Abstract : How comes that his contemporaries transformed the unfortunate demise of a scholar of renown into a legend in its own right ? By replacing the event in the context of the Parisians schools of the late XIIth century, the paper investigates the mechanisms and the background of Simon of Tournai’s affair. Gerard of Cambrai, Matthew Paris and Thomas of Cantimpré’s accounts and motivations are cross-examined and checked against what we know about the Parisian intellectual scene and its social and institutional conflicts. The picture we obtain is a contrasted one ; yet it does not lack a certain redeeming consistency which allows for a glimpse into the competitive and colourful scholarly life of medieval society at its best (and its worst).
