Scotland in the Imperial Crisis : integration and difference with England and America (1763-1783).
My research examines how Scotland and the Thirteen Colonies in North America saw each other at the time of the imperial crisis, that is the American Revolution and the ten-year prologue to it (1763-1783). As a result of the conflict between Britain and America, these two peripheries of the British Empire followed radically different paths. Scotland strengthened its integration within the union whereas the colonies progressively asserted their independence.
My work aims at comparing their mutual perspectives. It deals with the representations the Scots had of America and their views on the American controversy, but also covers the representations of Scotland in the press and pamphlets published in America.
