This First part starts with Cunningham’s book Ladák(1854) and concludes with the studies made the first ethnologists after the reopening of the area to foreigners in September 1974. The author is not very much interested in the region’s international caravan trade and this for two reasons. First this trade has been already very well studied, in particular by Rizvi (1999). Secondly his goal is rather, to describe the life conditions of the simple peasant, his needs compared to what he produces. It concludes that, in most cases, farmers were not self-sufficient and needed additional external sources of income.

Cette première partie commence avec le livre de Cunningham Ladák(1854) et se termine avec les travaux des premiers ethnologues arrivés au Ladakh après la réouverture de la région aux étrangers en septembre 1974. L’étude s’intéresse peu au grand commerce caravanier, d’abord parce qu’il a très bien été étudié en particulier par Rizvi (1999) et surtout parce que son but est de déterminer les conditions d’existence du simple paysan : ses besoins au regard de sa production. Il conclut que, dans la plupart des cas, les exploitations agricoles n’étaient pas viables sans un apport extérieur.
