Etude des parlers méridionaux : analyse factorielle

Abstract : Our goal was to describe the system characterizing the phonetic and social make-up of speakers of Southern French. We selected 11 sociological parameters, 6 perceptual parameters (taken from results of perception experiments of Southern French by Southerners) and 13 phonetic parameters. The corpus consisted of 16 interviews of speakers from 4 areas (Aix, Arles, Avignon and Marseille). The results obtained, charted by individual and variable, were studied quantitatively using principal component analysis. We highlighted the parameters that best describe the Southern French as well as how they related to the social life of the speakers. Differences between regional varieties of Southern French no longer seem to exist from an acoustic or phonetic point of view; only a sort of localisation based on the sociological stereotypes of each area would remain.
