The Maroons and the law in French Guiana from 1836 to the "Frenchifying" period The situation of the Maroons in French Guiana rarely interests the jurists. Nevertheless, from the French-Dutch agreement of 1836 to the "Frenchifying" of the 1960s, the history of the Maroons cannot be amputated of its legal dimension: France, sometimes respecting the legal orthodoxy, endows them with fragments of legal status, sometimes clearly choosing the illegality, endows them with fragments of de facto status. This situation is the joint work of the French authorities and of the Maroons, which alternately played with the law.

La situation des Marrons en Guyane française intéresse rarement les juristes. Pourtant, de la convention franco-néerlandaise de 1836 à la «francisation» des années 1960, l’histoire de ces Marrons ne peut être amputée de sa dimension juridique : la France, tantôt respectant l'orthodoxie juridique, les dote de fragments de statut de droit, tantôt s’engageant nettement dans l'illégalité, les dote de fragments de statut de fait. Cette situation est l'oeuvre conjointe des autorités françaises et des Marrons, qui tour à tour ont joué avec le droit.
