Grec ancien et modernité : l’officier militaire-traducteur et la constitution de l’État hellénique (1830-1860)

Abstract : During the first three decades after Modern Greece gained its independence (1832), Greek military officers would less distinguish themselves in the battlefields and much more in the intellectual life of the country. Indeed, many of them authored in Greek, as translators or authors of a more personal work, several books and articles on modern science and technology. To do so, they had to make use of their knowledge of Ancient Greek as well as their acquaintance with the literature of their ancestors on science and technology in order to render in Modern Greek hundreds of scientific and technical terms of the time. Who were these officers? What was the literary and scientific background they acquired at the Greek Military Academy and at the various European higher education establishments in which they pursued their studies? What translation strategies and conduits had they adopted and resorted to? What was the result of their efforts, especially regarding Greek state building? Here is a series of questions to which this article seeks to provide some answers.
