Academic Writing Activity: Student Writing in Transition

In this article we wish to demonstrate the value of analyzing university students’ writing as genres of discourse that are shaped by the university disciplines in which students are working. This demonstration is developed from a comparison of the results of two research projects about university students’ writing, one in France and one in the United States. More specifically, we focus on the ruptures that our analyses map out—for example, the rupture produced by the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies—and, on the other hand, the continuities that stabilize these transitions. It is clear that these ruptures and continuities are in large part connected to the “disciplinary contexts” that the students’ writing is framed by; this reinforces our theoretical hypothesis about the role of disciplinary framing in university genres.
Dans cet article, nous souhaitons montrer l’intérêt de traiter les écrits à l’université comme des genres de discours spécifiés par les disciplines universitaires dans lesquelles les étudiants inscrivent leur cursus. Cette démonstration s’appuie ici sur la confrontation des résultats de deux recherches sur ces écrits universitaires, menées l’une en France et l’autre aux États-Unis. Plus précisément nous nous centrons sur les ruptures qui jalonnent ces processus – telle celle qu’induit le passage de la licence au master – et sur, au contraire, les continuités qui les stabilisent. Il apparait clairement que ces ruptures et ces continuités sont largement soumises aux « contextes disciplinaires » qui spécifient ces écrits, ce qui renforce notre hypothèse théorique
