Effect of focal accent on the lingual coarticulation in the four-consonant cluster /kskl/ in French: an EPG study

Yohann Meynadier

Résumé

Many studies have investigated the interplay between coarticulation and stress concerning the motion of the articulators. But there are few studies about this matter using EPG. I'm aware of none related to consonant clusters. This study focuses on the effect of stress and its position on the timing and the duration of lingual constrictions involved in the production of the four-consonant cluster /kskl/ in French. The results of the study support that (i) the presence of stress influences the coarticulatory process of the lingual constrictions in giving rise to the greater steady state of the gestures, but not (really) a decrease of the duration of overlap, (ii) the extent of the effect of stress position on the phasing of lingual gestures could provide relatively good cues to detect the syllable boundary in the complex lingual clusters in intralexical position.
