Détermination du besoin en protéines du canard mulard en phase de finition : effet sur la croissance et la production de foie gras

Abstract : The protein requirements of mule duck for growth have been derive from protein requirements measured in the Muscovy duck. Recent studies, allowed to precise these requirements for mule female duck used for meat production. For male mule ducks used for fatty liver production, it is necessary to investigate protein requirements for the finishing period. Yet, the rearing period is longer (12 vs. 10 weeks for the female mule duck) and male ducks are feed restricted before the overfeeding period (8 to 12 weeks). The aim of the study was to determine the dietary protein level allowing optimizing muscle development and feed conversion ratio (FCR). A total of 660 mule ducks were reared and distributed into 5 groups (6 pens per group). All ducks received the same starting (0 to 3.5 weeks, 22.5% Crude Protein) and growing (3.5 to 8 weeks, 15% CP) diets except the control group. During the finishing period (8 to 12 weeks), 4 protein levels were tested: 12, 14, 16 and 18%. The ratios essential amino acids/lysine, lysine/crude protein and metabolisable energy (2900 kcal/kg) were the same for all experimental diets except the control group which was fed with diets now used by farmers (14.5% CP and 2700 kcal ME/kg). The finishing diet providing 12% CP decreased growth performance (-5.79 g/day for Average Daily Gain) and a lower breast muscle development by comparison with the other groups. The groups fed diets providing 16 and 18% CP had the lowest Food Conversion Ratio for the finishing period and highest weight of fatty liver. This trial realized under experimental conditions must be validated under farming conditions to confirm the recommendation of 16% CP in finishing diet.
