Protoplasts and direct gene transfer

Direct gene transfer can be obtained by electroporating a mixture of protoplasts and DNA, resulting in the DNA being incorporated into the protoplasts without loss of their viability. To date, this is the only method capable of creating transgenic cereals. Its use in the study of transitory gene expression is outlined.
