THE ROLE OF CORTICAL BONE MICROSTRUCTURE IN THE EFFECTIVE MESOSCOPIC ELASTIC PROPERTIES

Résumé

The vascular porosity of cortical bone is a major determinant of the variation in mesoscopic (millimeterscale) stiffness [1]. However, porosity was regarded as a fraction of void volume in the study. To better understand bone mechanical behavior, the role of pore network microarchitecture should not be ignored. This work aims to investigate the relationship between microstructure and mesoscopic stiffness of human cortical bone. The microstructure and anisotropic stiffness were experimentally quantified. Also, in order to control for the effect of inter-specimen bone mineralized matrix elasticity variations, the stiffness was obtained by homogenization.
