« Animaux de Pindare, animaux des scholiastes »
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to study how the scholiasts understood and interpreted the presence of real or mythical animals in the first six Olympian Odes. After having compared the list of pindaric animals with that of the scholiasts, we investigate the function of the animal scholia. It is observed that they are very seldom used to express a value judgement on the poetry of Pindar. On the other hand they facilitate the understanding of it by giving keys for reading : sometimes they bring information on the extra-textual data (horse-races, mythical tradition), to which Pindar refers ; sometimes they analyze the animal epithets or images chosen by the poet.
On étudie ici comment les scholiastes ont interprété la présence d'animaux réels ou mythiques dans les six premières Olympiques. Après avoir comparé la liste des animaux pindariques à celle des scholiastes, on s'interroge donc sur la fonction des scholies animalières. On observe qu'elles ne servent que rarement à exprimer un jugement de valeur sur la poésie pindarique ; en revanche, elles en facilitent la compréhension en donnant des clés de lecture : tantôt elles apportent des informations sur les données extra-textuelles (courses de chevaux, traditions mythiques) auxquelles Pindare fait allusion ; tantôt elles analysent les épithètes ou les images animalières qu'a choisies le poète.
