Preparation of alkanesulfonic acids by photo-oxidation of sulfur derivatives.

Alkanesulfonic acids RSO3H are prepd. by photooxidn. of RSR1 [R1 = H, R, SR; R = alkyl] in aq. or alc. MeCN at 200-400 nm. Thus, MeSO3H was obtained in 62% yield together with 19% H2SO4 by oxidizing MeSSMe in aq. MeCN for 165 min at 35-40° with irradn. with a 450-W Hg lamp. [on SciFinder(R)]
