Morocco, Fundamentalist State?

Le Maroc, État fondamentaliste ?

Résumé

The fundamentalist attitude has several specificties. In the Moroccan context, the mechanisms of state fundamentalism are linked in particular to the genealogical referent of the Alawite dynasty in power. The latter claims its fundamentalist identity in the sense of its unfailing connection to the Prophet of Islam by his daughter Fatima. From this point of view, the case of Morocco is interesting because the monarchy, as an embodiment of the Moroccan State and a supreme political actor, puts forward a definition of fundamentalism based on a combination of resources: Religious, genealogical and political. Consequently, the variations around the notion of fundamentalism in this context offer special meanings in the sense of a complex relationship between theological and political registers. The appropriation of these paradigms allows the institution of monarchy to stand out in relation to the other Arab States and to spread the idea of a stable and intellectually modern traditional Moroccan identity.
