Theatre for Development (TfD) is a genre that is booming in Africa. Based on specific missions assigned often jointly by the States and the " International Community " , its purpose is to inform targeted audiences of problems related to societal variances which hamper development. This paper proposes to analyze how this essentially didactic form of theatre, which emerges on the margin of the traditional sphere of drama, constituting thereby a minor form compared to more insti-tutionalized ones, fully becomes meaningful in a context that it tightly espouses. Without necessarily delving into the supposedly inherently democratic nature of theatre, this contribution proposes in a modest way to show how practicing a theatre created with the intent of raising consciousness can go beyond this original intent and trigger civic engagement.

Le théâtre dit « de sensibilisation », encore appelé «Théâtre pour le développe-ment », est un genre en plein essor en Afrique, dont l'objectif est d'informer (voire de transformer) des publics préalablement ciblés, au sujet de problèmes liés au dysfonctionnement de la société, autant d'obstacles au « développement », selon des objectifs fixés par les États souvent de concert avec la « commu-nauté internationale ». Il s'agira de voir en quoi cette forme essentiellement didactique qui s'invente hors des espaces traditionnel-lement dévolus au théâtre, constituant par là une forme mineure par rapport à des formes institutionnalisées, prend tout son sens dans un contexte qu'elle épouse étroitement. Sans pour autant mobiliser le caractère suppo-sé foncièrement démocratique du théâtre, cette contribution se propose modestement de montrer comment la pratique théâtrale conçue à des fins de sensibilisation peut aller au-delà de sa prime intention didactique et générer une participation citoyenne. mots-clés : Théâtre de sensibilisation-industrie minière-Congo-participation.
