Gender at the Institut Universitaire de France (1991-­‐2016)

Founded in 1991 by a government decree, the IUF aimed at providing the development of high level research (French excellence) in universites. Membership set annually for five years, results out of a very selec,ve procedure. Members are requested to remain in their universi,es, in order to improve their own research. IUF members (juniors i.e. under 40, seniors i.e. above 40 and renewed seniors) have less of a teaching work load and may get substan,al financial support. Yet, the history-­‐builders of the Ins,tute have never carried this out through a gendered lens. Our aim is ask ourselves what it takes for an outstanding academic woman to be selected as an IUF member ?
