Saussurean linearity in retrospect
A linearidade saussuriana em restrospecto
Résumé
Taking into account of the manuscripts of Ferninand de Saussure changes considerably the contours of saussurian linguistics as designed by the Cours de linguistique générale, published posthumously. This statement is true especially for the concept of "linearity". Its is addressed in a very succinct way in the Cours de linguistique générale. The adjective linear occurs only twice and applies sometimes to the sign, sometimes to the language. The object of the article is to exhume the variations and the productivity of a reflection about linearity of which the posthume publication of 1916 does not give full account.
We observe, from the manuscripts writings of the linguist and the study books of the students, the genesis, the development and the terminological variations – ‘consecutivity’, ‘unispatiality’ - of this concept in the saussurian thought. This path leads to isolate, in the study books dedicated to the search of anagrams, the part in which Saussure makes the linear succession inherent in the facts of language "the core principle of all usefull reflection on words".
O estudo dos manuscritos de Ferdinand de Sausure modifica consideravelmente os contornos da linguística saussuriana tal como desenhada no Curso de Linguística Geral, publicado em caráter póstumo. Essa constatação vale particularmente para o conceito de ‘linearidade’. Seu tratamento no Curso de Linguística Geral é dos mais sucintos. O adjetivo linear ocorre apenas duas vezes e se aplica ora ao signo, ora à língua. O objeto deste artigo consiste em exumar as variações e a produtividade de uma reflexão acerca da linearidade de que não dá conta a publicação póstuma de 1916.
Aplicamo-nos a observar, a partir dos escritos manuscritos do linguista e dos cadernos de seus estudantes, a gênese, o desenvolvimento e as variações terminológicas – ‘consecutividade’, ‘uniespacialidade’ – que o conceito conhece no pensamento saussuriano. Esse percurso conduzirá a isolar, nos cadernos consagrados à pesquisa dos anagramas, a passagem em que Saussure faz da sucessão linear inerente aos fatos de língua “o princípio central de toda reflexão útil sobre as palavras”.
