Query Rewriting for Semantic Multimedia Data Retrieval

Résumé

Recently, the increasing availability of multimedia data, especially on the Web, has led to the development of several tools to manage such data. The management of multimedia data requires to consider features extraction algorithms, content representation models and efficient search engines. Multimedia content can be described in many different ways depending on context, users, purpose of use and application domain. To address these description requirements of a wide range of applications, the MPEG committee1 developed MPEG-72 standard in 2001. It aims to describe multimedia content at several levels of granularity and abstraction, to include description of features, structure, content and metadata about the content. This chapter is organized as follows: in Sect. 2, we give a brief description of the MPEG-7 standard and an MPEG-7 description example. In this section, we discuss the MPEG-7 limitations also. Section 3 deals with the querying of MPEG-7 descriptions. We introduce XQuery language and discuss its ability to perform efficient retrieval in the MPEG-7 descriptions. Section 4 describes the framework architecture used to alleviate both MPEG-7 and XQuery limitations. The framework components and their inter-connection are also presented. In Sect. 5, we introduce an application example to describe how the framework processes to respond to a given user's query. Section 6 relates our work to the existing ones. Finally, we conclude in Sect. 7.
