For a temporalist approach of digital communication devices and their uses

Abstract : The theoretical approch built by the sociology of uses for 30 years, summarized through both topical proposed by Francis Jauréguiberry and Serge Proulx (2011) is no longer sufficient to analyze the use of digital communication devices. The necessary renewal concepts adapted to the forms of appropriation of these devices, unstable by design challenges researchers interested in uses. The focus should not simply be placed on continuity, reproduction, filiation of uses but also on their fragility, their lability, their instability. It is indeed difficult to consider the analysis of stabilization current uses (Coutant, Domenget, 2013), to specify the interwar between social uses (Lacroix, 1992; Pronovost, 1994) and "limited uses "(Kellner, 2010), while incorporating the adjustments know the uses (Boullier, 1997), the fragility of uses (Domenget, 2013) and instability by design of devices (Garud et al., 2008; Latsko-Toth , 2010, 2014). To renew the uses studies, several angles of temporalities approach can be pursued: the "moments" of time (past, present, future), "scales" of time (long, medium and short term), "domains" of structuring of time (work, family, leisure, privacy ...) or temporal modes of expression (subjectified objectified narrative or discourse) (Dubar and Rolle, 2008). For ou part, we offer to focus on the time scales to analyze the importance of historicity and diachronicity of uses and devices. Our reflexive analysis on temporality to analyse uses and digital communication devices will examine the renewal of the question of users power. It is based on two recent empirical research on different populations of users: professional on visibility on Twitter, ordinary users of the Internet Relay Chat. Through our approach by temporality, it is to propose a suitable vocabulary, intelligibility tool for training digital uses and a dynamic model in which the uses are developed in conjunction with devices that mediate, in a set of constant interaction in between. Instability by design of digital devices is a disposition to be a co-construction by their users.
