Effect of Water Injection at Inlet of Turbocharger on Compressor Performances

Résumé

In experiments on water injection conducted on internal combustion engines, water injection is generally performed in the intake manifold upstream of the engine intake. The cooling effect is used to increase power in spark ignition engines or to reduce NOx emissions in compression engines. The present paper studies the effect of water injection upstream of the compressor and discusses its influence on turbocharger performances. Experiments were conducted on a standard turbocharger with a mist system and an air-water injection system. Test bench features are indicated and the characteristics of the water injection systems are described. Calculation of the compressor power in presence of water injection is explained. Some significant results are presented.
