"La critique dramatique au miroir des comédies de spectateurs chez les héritiers de Molière"

Abstract : « Drama criticism as seen in relation to the comedies of spectators amongst Molière’s literary inheritors » In the wake of the Critique de L’École des femmes, comedies of spectators met with a great success among Molière’s successors. They give a say to fictional figures of the audience and allow them to think critically about a theatre play. Can we consider this repertoire as a specific place for a specific kind of dramatic criticism cast in theatrical form? This article focuses on three plays originally performed between 1691 and 1702. It seeks to show that these fictions aim at promoting the plays, thus giving a distorted version of the audience’s criticism. The commercial function of these plays reveals deep transformations in the cultural field on the eve of the eighteenth century.
