A Transnational Journal: Revista Nacional e Estrangeira (1839-1845), the Literature and the Criticism in Nineteenth Century
Um periódico transnacional: a Revista Nacional e Estrangeira (1839-1845), a literatura e a crítica do século XIX

At the beginning of 1839, “a Brazilian society of men of literature” gathered to create a new journal, aiming at delivering high quality content to the society of Rio de Janeiro, especially on political, economic and literary topics. They gave birth to Revista Nacional e Estrangeira, a compilation of international texts, selected from imported publications, mostly from England and France. The objective of this article is to analyze two literary reviews published on the pages of the journal: “Juiso da Revista de Edinburgo sobre a litteratura franceza contemporanea”, originally conveyed by the Edinburgh Review, and “D. Sebastião: o encoberto” romance-poema, publicado em Lisboa no anno de 1839”, from an unknown author. In order to evaluate the methodologies employed by the two critics, I will investigate the criteria used by them to issue their opinions as well as the related founding arguments. Furthermore, I will draw the correlations between the English and Brazilian reviews in order to understand to what extent the two analyses converge and diverge.
No início de 1839, “uma sociedade de literatos brasileiros” se reuniu para criar um novo periódico, engajado em fornecer à sociedade carioca material de qualidade, principalmente sobre assuntos políticos, econômicos e literários. Foi assim que surgiu a Revista Nacional e Estrangeira, uma compilação de textos de origem internacional, selecionados de publicações importadas, sobretudo, da Inglaterra e da França. Este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar duas críticas literárias difundidas nas páginas do referido periódico: “Juiso da Revista de Edimburgo sobre a litteratura franceza contemporanea”, inicialmente veiculado pela Edinburgh Review, e “D. Sebastião: o encoberto, romance-poema, publicado em Lisboa no anno de 1839”, de um autor anônimo. A fim de averiguar os procedimentos metodológicos empregados pelos dois críticos, investigarei os critérios utilizados por eles para emitir seus pareceres e os argumentos de que lançaram mão para fundamentá-los. Tenciono ainda estabelecer paralelos entre a crítica inglesa e a brasileira para compreender em que medida as duas análises se aproximaram e se distanciaram.
