Une politique des traces numériques est-elle possible ?

Abstract : Digital traces production and processing techniques may serve governmental purposes. Antoinette Rouvroy and Thomas Berns have described this “algorithmic governmentality”, which they consider as deeply apolitical. They have criticized its claims to objectivity and harmlessness. And they have diagnosed its destructive effects on the conditions of possibility of common and emancipation. But this algorithmic governmentality, by submitting technology to a schema of instrumentality, feeds an anthropocentrism that depopulates the digital world : algorithmic actors and computational machines are made inexistent despite the fact that they are involved in the composition process of the world. This article aims to propose a technological concept of digital trace – technological in the sense that it seeks to meet technology halfway, that is to say to get technological objects out of the invisibility they are put in when considered as simple tools – in order to rethink the conditions of emancipation.
