Abstract : Based on Foucault’s text « La vie des hommes infâmes », this article questions the political use of self-writing. Why emerges a political use of « writen trace of the self » in subjugation mechanisms ? On one hand, by making use of Philippe Artières’ conceptualization of the « trace » , it attempts a genealogy of the written trace of ordinary lives and its uses, from its first appearances to its perfected form in the disciplinary devices. On the other hand, it aims to show the philosophical and political values of the self-narratives published by Foucault. From these two directions, it intends to enable reflection on the actuality of this political use of self-writing.
