The artist Feng Zikai (1898-1975) developed a new aesthetics reinterprating the categories of aesthetic appreciation of Chinese traditional painting and understood Western painting through his own framework. An awareness of Chinese identity led him to some surprising simplifications in his perception of Chinese or Western painting. Thus, he saw Van Gogh as the archetype of the Eastern hermit. The essay analyses the pictorial perception of Feng Zikai through his numerous educational essays, being careful to place them in the context of the aesthetic thought of his time.

L'artiste Feng Zikai (1898-1975) a élaboré une esthétique nouvelle réinterprétant les catégories d'appréciation de la peinture chinoise traditionnelle et apposant sa propre grille de lecture à la peinture occidentale. La prise de conscience de l'identité chinoise le conduit à certaines simplifications étonnantes dans sa perception de la peinture chinoise ou occidentale. Ainsi, il verra en Van Gogh l'archétype de l'artiste ermite oriental, dont la folie est valorisée. Le but de cet article est d'analyser la perception picturale que propose Feng Zikai à travers ses nombreux essais à visée éducative, tout en prenant soin de la replacer dans le contexte de la pensée esthétique de son temps.
