Jeux d’enfants vus par Feng Zikai (1898-1975)

Abstract : Feng Zikai (1898-1975), both a painter and a writer, is famous for the children paintings he made in a traditional way in the twenties and in the thirties in China. That’s why he got the nickname of “chidren artist”. He observed them carefully and pictures them playing. He notices the everydaylife objects are often used as toys. According to him, children games are equivalent to adult work. Playing children are so spontaneous, full of imagination and concentrated on their games that they trigger his admiration. The children world contrasts with the narrowness and the rigidity of the adult world. Feng Zikai is influenced by the new trends of ideas on children of May Fourth time. The Western philosophy plays an important role in his conception of the child as well as taoism and buddhism. He defines the artist as a playing child, who sees the world as an endless game. Feng Zikai’s numerous children drawings show his wish to identify himself with children.
