Monnaies et marchés dans les campagnes gauloises : concepts, lieux, objets

Abstract : This paper tries to find new ways of studying monetisation and market economy in the countryside, using non numismatic material. First, it reconsiders the opposition between natural economy and money economy; a clearer definition of the concept of monetisation is a way out of this rather unproductive debate. Second, it considers the places where coins could have been used, taking as a starting point Luuk de Ligt's typology of fairs and markets. Finally, it reviews some objects that could be direct or indirect clues to the use of coins.
