Bureaucratie, organisations et formalisation des savoirs

The sociology of organizations emerged from the distinction between formal or theoretical knowledge, on the one hand, and practical or informal knowledge, on the other. This distinction suggested a gap between the visions produced by leaders, based on legal or scientific forms of knowledge, and the empirical knowledge developed by actors – in passing justifying the role of the sociologist in providing access to actors’ behaviours within organizations. Starting in the 1970s, transformations in organizations called into question this distinction. Sociologists analyzed how actors developed forms of knowledge that later acquired formal characteristics. In so doing, research in the sociology of organizations suggested that the use of more formalized knowledge for the purpose of controlling or coordinating could lead to a process of bureaucratization.
La sociologie des organisations s’est construite autour d’une opposition fondatrice entre savoirs formels ou théoriques d’une part, savoirs pratiques ou informels, de l’autre. Cette opposition soulignait l’écart entre la vision surplombante des dirigeants, équipés de connaissances scientifiques ou légales, et les savoirs empiriques des exécutants ; tout en justifiant le rôle du sociologue, seul en position de donner accès aux comportements des acteurs au sein des organisations. Les transformations des organisations depuis les années 1970, ont conduit à interroger cette opposition fondatrice. Les sociologues ont étudié comment des acteurs développaient en pratique des savoirs qui pouvaient ensuite acquérir des propriétés for- melles. Ce faisant, les travaux de sociologie des organisations ont souligné que l’usage de savoirs plus formalisés à des fins de contrôle ou de coordination, pouvait induire des processus bureaucratiques.
