Writing for Boys and Girls

Résumé

When Hawthorne undertook the writing of his children books, it was also, and perhaps above all, to face a delicate financial situation. In this respect, it seems clear that, at the time of their writing, these books were to be considered a brief literary parenthesis in Hawthorne’s career. This literary task was one which he had already accepted to perform, yet not performed yet so entangled was he with his Customs duties. But, when he did, the result was more than satisfactory. The Wonder-Book for Boys and Girls, published in 1851, and followed one year later by the Tanglewood Tales, are adroit pieces of literary rewriting. In the hands of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Greek mythology becomes imbibed with Puritan hues so well delineated that it goes so far as to somehow dim the intensity of the principle of paganism inherent in mythological stories. But this “Puritanization” of Greek myths is in fact yet another masque donned by Hawthorne to further his own doctrine of feminist minor discourse. Indeed, these Greek mythology-based stories seem to be just a pretext for developing his theory of the feminine so as to be understood by children. Our communication proposes to analyze Hawthorne’s mythological tales in the light of Deleuze and Guatarri’s notion of minor as a way to address the wrongs done to the minor class of women. A study of the heroines of the tales proper but also of the girls among the audience will help us define Hawthorne’s feminized territory of major Greek mythology.
