Exchanges, gifts and debts: social networks and resilience in today’s Vietnam

Résumé
The paper deals with a central, yet understudied, aspect of Vietnamese people’s everyday life: non-commercial transactions. It refers to all the exchanges (in kind or in cash) that are realized outside the market; they are based on interpersonal relationships between exchangers. This circulation is very intense in Vietnam and takes various shapes: gift, loan with or without interest, credit groups… The authors show that this circulation between people draws an assistance network to which everyone can resort when facing a difficulty, becoming a key element of one’s resilience. In this respect, it somehow constitutes a social security scheme. In a context where neither market, State, kinship, nor religion are sufficient to maintain social ties, the non commercial circulation, with its practical utility and social functions, appears to be a key element of the social fabric in today’s Vietnam.
L’article analyse un pan essentiel de la vie quotidienne des Vietnamiens, pourtant peu étudié : la circulation non marchande. Celle-ci désigne les transactions intervenant hors du marché et dont le déroulement repose sur des relations interpersonnelles. Très intense au Vietnam, elle prend différentes formes : don, prêts avec ou sans intérêt, crédit rotatif… On montre ici que cette circulation structure un réseau d’entraide auquel chacun peut recourir dans les périodes de difficulté, devenant un élément fondamental de la résilience des foyers, si bien qu’à certains égards, il s’apparente à un dispositif d’assurance sociale. Dans un contexte où ni le marché, ni l’État, ni la parenté, ni le religieux ne suffisent à maintenir le lien social, la circulation non marchande, avec ses fonctions utilitaires et sociales, s’affirme comme un élément central de la socialité vietnamienne d’aujourd’hui.
