Automated killing in the digital era: a psychoanalytical reflection on warfare drones and related ethical issues

All of the previously evoked -military and public/civilian- uses and practices related to combat UAVs' video-capture capacities and to the resulting war front footage pose important ethical questions and thus may have several psychological, social and political consequences that are not easy to anticipate, assess, prevent or avoid. Certainly, some policies and regulations regarding the use of science-fiction and video games materials when promoting real military operations are necessary at least in order to avoid intentionally bringing people to confound fiction and reality. Also, a thorough and joint reflection (with the main stakeholders of various fields but possibly with the public community for the sake of democratization of decision-making) on the various insidious impacts of making drone-captured war clips available online to social networks and to the global civilian community, is mandatory in order to sort out the different risks that this usage bears on individual and collective levels, and to consider the ways of counterbalancing these risks, if not preventing these clips from going public.
Les usages et pratiques liés aux capacités de capture vidéo des drones et aux scènes de guerre qui en découlent posent des questions éthiques importantes et peuvent avoir plusieurs conséquences psychologiques, sociales et politiques qui ne sont pas faciles à anticiper, évaluer, prévenir ou éviter. Certes, certaines politiques et règlements concernant l'utilisation de matériel de science-fiction et de jeux vidéo lors de la promotion de véritables opérations militaires sont nécessaires au moins afin d'éviter que les opérateurs confondent la fiction et la réalité. En outre, une réflexion approfondie s'impose avec les principales parties prenantes et la communauté publique en vue d'une démocratisation de la prise de décision sur les impacts de la mise en ligne de clips de guerre obtenus par des drones. La communauté civile mondiale devrait se mobiliser afin de repérer les risques que cette utilisation porte aux niveaux individuel et collectif, et envisager les moyens de contrebalancer ces risques, sinon d'empêcher certains films d'être rendus publics.
