Magic Bullet in the Head? Psychiatric Revolutions and Their Aftermath
Résumé
This chapter examines the emergence and rise of a rhetoric of revolutionary change in western Psychiatry from the postwar period to the 2000s. It traces the roots of this rhetoric in the transformations of psychiatry and society in the immediate postwar period and examines the development of competing vision of revolutions in diverse segments of psychiatry in subsequent years. The chapter also offers a survey of the historiography of biological treatments and deinstitutionalization in the second half of twentieth century.
