Persistent Marginality: Deviance as a Travelling Aesthetics

Résumé

Dickensian marginals are famously numerous, and many of them have lived in collective memory for generations. Created within the pale of Victorian decency, Dickens’s deviants nonetheless have great imaginary force; such power is precisely what accounts for their eclectic and long-lasting afterlife as characters. There are many successors to Dickens’s marginals because these characters will resist onesided interpretations and definite rationalisation—marginality, with them, is never to be pinned down as a stable motif. The aesthetics of their deviance is already reconfigured within Dickens’s novels themselves; and, ever since, it has been repeatedly adopted and adapted. Using three of Dickens’s most memorable marginals— Sikes, Fagin, and Miss Havisham—, this article will examine how Dickensian deviance persists but also evolves, moving from one medium to another, and from one century to another.
