Abstract : Beginning in the 1930s, a new type of women’s magazine appeared in France, concentrating on the theme of female beauty. The concept of beauty, previously associated either with natural endowments or with clothing, was redefined by the editors of these new publications to be the result of regular use of beauty products. The earliest of these magazines, Votre Beauté, was created by Eugène Schueller, founder of the cosmetics conglomerate L’Oreal. This article focuses on how the new definition of beauty was developed in the pages of Votre Beauté, through both editorial content and commercial advertising
