Modalités du démantèlement des lieux de culte et politique de grands travaux de l’Antiquité tardive à Narbo Martius

Abstract : From the 3rd c. AD, Narbonne folding in on itself behind its fortifications left in a neglected state the suburban quarters and monumental buildings. But their dismantling as well as the dismantling of the capitolium seems to be effective from the end of the 4th c. and beginning 5th c. Recent investigations within the framework of a collective project on antique harbours at Narbonne put to light the reuse of architectural of monumental buildings for the maintenance of the harbour areas. These discoveries inside the city lagoon, dated to the end of the 4th c. or beginning 5th c., are contemporaneous with early Christian churches where some pieces from the capitolium are being used in the foundations (Saint-Félix, Saint-Julien or the church situated Place Bistan). They raise the question of the management of these pagan monuments by the public authorities at the time of the Theodosian law, as Narbonne was becoming a Christian metropolis.
