„Marc Ferro’s DIE WOCHE VOR 50 JAHREN / HISTOIRE PARALLÈLE: The Experience and Analysis of Historical Images on Television

Résumé

An irony of history: the most continuous and certainly longest engagement of a historian with film on television has been largely ignored by the colleagues in his own field and historians of film or the media. I am referring to Marc Ferro and the television series he moderated and co-created, HISTOIRE PARALLÈLE / DIE WOCHE VOR 50 JAHREN (1989-2001), which was broadcast weekly for twelve years and reached an audience of millions. The history of what is certainly the longest series on Arte still waits to be written, due not least to the virtually biblical format with 630 episodes. The following discussion can only spotlight this gap, which is unfortunate not only when it comes to research in terms of current television historical formats: the focus will be placed on the potential of the series in the pro- duction and experience of history. A main hypothesis is that the relative simplicity of the devices used enabled an adequate and reflected use of film as a source and an agent of history, opening a realm of experience to a wide audience.
