A l'unisson des tambours. Note sur l'ordre social et la chasse aux têtes parmi les Wa de Chine

Résumé

his article examines, with reference to myths and narratives from the Wa of Xuelin (Yunnan), the symbolism of the great rituals of regeneration of life, which were linked to head-hunting up to the 1960s. During these rituals male representatives of each clan came together to beat a pair of sexed drums carved out of tree trunks. The ceremony expressed an ideology of the "organic unity" which rendered many advan- tages in the agonistic context of head-hunting. This article tries to suggest parallels with the Naga of Assam who betray relevant similarities with the Wa concerning head-hunting, a social organization based on exogamous patrilineal clans, a habitat made of big villages, the practice of shifting cultivation on burnt ground, the beating of drums carved out of tree trunks on occasions of major agrarian rites and other aspects.
