Sacred space, secular figures – From the illustrated Bible to formal portrait in New Jolfa
Résumé
Based on representative examples of interferences between sacred space and secular world in the pictorial representations in New Jolfa (Isfahan), the paper intends to highlight the beginnings of a secularization process that will allow the emergence of a renewed Armenian art in the course of the 18th century. The proposed examples include a variety of cases, from the intrusion of laymen in sacred spaces to the reuse of heavenly figures extracted from the religious context for which they were initially designed in a visual composition aimed at glorifying a temporal authority.
