Demographic analysis of Pre-roman populations near the Greek colony of Massalia (southern France). The concept, the method and an introduction to historical openings

Résumé

Our purpose is to study Iron Age civilisation of southern France through its inhabitants. The demographic level is indeed a perfect reflect of all the vicissitudes these populations have gone through. But the link between archaeological artefacts and population is not so easy to establish. Problems will be exposed, followed by the methodological side of the question. Once “paleodemographic” variations obtained, we will try to interpret them from an historical point of view. That is to say, confronting the results with historical sources and the economic context. We will see to what extend this comparison brings new elements, especially concerning the relationship between Phocean colonists and local societies.
