Our aim is to convert archaeological data, mainly pre-Roman funeral remains from the south-western part of the French Alps, into demographic indicators. The idea is to introduce new concepts, from human geography or from anthropology, into the archaeological discipline, to renew and particularly to refine our perception of populating dynamics. Our approach consists of taking all of the existing documentation with the aim of processing it on a quantitative level in order to read it in another way. This ambitious project has met numerous stumbling blocks. The implementation of an adapted protocol is thus essential. Finally, to what extent will we be able to attain true demography? Can we succeed in reading a varied funeral corpus, which may even have been studied long ago, with new concepts? Using which tools?

notre démarche est une tentative de traduction des données funéraires protohistoriques alpines (versant occidental des alpes du sud) en indicateurs des variations du niveau global de population. L'idée est d'introduire dans la discipline archéologique de nouveaux concepts, issus de géographie humaine ou d'anthropologie, pour renouveler et surtout affiner notre perception de la dynamique du peuplement. afin de la lire autrement, l'approche consiste à reprendre l'ensemble de la documentation déjà existante, pour la traiter sur un plan quantitatif. projet ambitieux, car les écueils sont nombreux : la mise en place d'un protocole adapté est donc primordiale. au final, dans quelle mesure pourra-ton atteindre la démographie véritable ? peut-on parvenir à lire avec de nouveaux concepts un corpus funéraire varié et parfois très anciennement étudié ? par quels outils ?
