This study deals with the interpretation of object pronouns and zero anaphora in arithmetic problems like: Take the number 6. Divide it by 2, multiply it/multiply by 3. Add with 6 what you obtain after these two operations. Write the final result hereafter. From a linguistic point of view we can make the hypothesis that the version with an object pronoun in the third sentence imposes a distributive solution (6/2=3, 6x3=18, 3+18+6=27) whereas the version with zero anaphora leads to a transitive solution (6/2=3, 3x3=9, 3+9+6=15). Nevertheless, from a psychological point of view, we can make the hypothesis that subjects have routines for such tasks and that these routines favourish the sequential procedure. We can then wait for a strong bias in favour of the transitive solution with the version with a pronoun. This expectation is confirmed by an experiment showing that, even if the probability of occurrence of the distributive solution is reinforced by adding in the pronoun version of the texts several linguitic indices supposed to prevent the transitive interpretation, the subjects continue to adopt massively a sequential procedure. These results are discussed in the last part of the paper where several explanations and developments are considered.

Le travail qui suit porte sur l'interprétation des pronoms objet de troisième personne et des anaphores nulles dans des énoncés de problèmes arithmétiques très simples. Plus exactement, je vais me demander quels aspects du contexte et du cotexte peuvent favoriser ou inhiber telle ou telle interprétation de ces expressions dans ces énoncés. Cette étude comprend une partie psycholinguistique dans laquelle je présente les résultats d'une expérimentation conduite auprès de 100 étudiants. Ces résultats m'amèneront à discuter les hypothèses qui sous tendent cette expérimentation
