Where linguistics meets translation theory

In this paper, we attempt to clarify the potential relation between linguistics and translation theory by articulating three kinds of considerations: purely theoretical reflections about the two disciplines, general reflections emerging from practice, and finally some observations on actual practice, based on a short text by Freud in German, translated into English and into French. Theoretical options and practical choices regarding all these aspects can have major consequences on the reality of this relation, which is accordingly variable. On the theoretical side, some linguistic options are taken on board on rejected by translation theorists with hardly a thought. And on the practical side, translating, which implies a confrontation with a particular work, tends to thwart any attempt to theorize the activity in advance.
Dans cet article, nous nous efforçons de préciser les relations possibles entre linguistique et traductologie en articulant des considérations purement théoriques, des considérations de praticiens et l’observation de données empiriques (plusieurs traductions en anglais et en français d’un texte de Freud en allemand). Les options théoriques et choix pratiques sur ces différents aspects ont des conséquences importantes sur la réalité de ces relations, qui peuvent grandement varier. Du côté théorique, certaines conceptions linguistiques sont adoptées ou rejetés par les traductologues de façon parfois non réfléchie, alors que la pratique, confrontation avec une oeuvre spécifique, est apte à déjouer toute tentative de théorisation a priori.
