Le Héros chez Rashīd aḍ-Ḍa‘īf: la quête d'une identité

The hero's quest of identity is considered in Rashīd aḍ-Ḍa‘īf's works on two levels, personal and collective. Aḍ-Ḍa‘īf's novels, and especially ‘Azīzī as-sayyid Kawabata and Nāḥiyat al-barā’a, reveal a process that is developed through three steps. The hero, who is autodiegetic, aims in the first step at the construction of a personal identity. He affirms his singularity and takes his distance with the familial group to adhere to a social and political community with which he believes that he will share the same ideals and convictions. A second step is marked by the collapse of this process. The hero multiplies the acknowledgments of failure on different levels: personal, ideological, political, cultural and religious. In the novels posterior to ‘Azīzī as-sayyid Kawabata, this disappointment leads him to a third step where, plunged as he is in an utter confusion and anguish, he doubts of all kind of salutary dynamism. And we must insist on the fact that the influence of the Lebanese civil war is decisive in this evolution. Although Rashīd aḍ-Ḍa‘īf's writing is ‘intimate’, it raises many questions about social and cultural burning problems in the Arabic world and especially its links with modernity. It reflects a new kind of commitment that is called ‘post-modern’ by the author himself.
L’identité, notion, actuellement en vogue, couvre un large champ sémantique. Il convient, pour éviter toute confusion et pour délimiter mon champ d’analyse, de définir l’acception de ce terme. Deux axes principaux balisent mon approche de l’identité du héros de Rashîd ad-Da‘if. L’un touche les dimensions d’identité personnelle, définies ainsi dans l’Encyclopédie Universalis : « mon identité c’est ce qui me rend semblable à moi-même et différent des autres ; c’est ce par quoi je me sens exister aussi bien en mes personnages qu’en mes actes de personnes…Mon identité c’est ce par quoi je me définis et me connais, ce par quoi je me sens accepté et reconnu comme tel par autrui. Les dimensions de l’identité personnelle dépendent, en effet, pour une large part des idéologies de la personne qui traversent une culture donnée.» (1) L’autre touche la dimension collective. Parler de l’identité dans ce cas serait de déterminer l’appartenance à un groupe « dans lequel l’individu est inscrit à sa place au sein d’une classe d’être humain donnée, opposée à d’autres… » (2)
