COMPETÊNCIAS MATEMÁTICAS IMPLICADAS EM ATIVIDADES DE TRABALHO INFORMAL EM SITUAÇÃO DE EXCLUSÃO SOCIAL: INFLUÊNCIA DE VARIÁVEIS CULTURAIS RELACIONADAS AO GÊNERO NO DESENVOLVIMENTO OU INIBIÇÃO DESSAS COMPETÊNCIAS

Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mathematical knowledge obtained as a result of work activities developed by subjects with little schooling in social exclusion contexts. This study belongs to the research field ‘Culture and Cognition’, which includes gender issues, research developed by the Recife Group (Carraher, Nunes, Schliemann and collaborators) and the ethnomathematics research program, which is led by Ubiratan D’Ambrosio. The study was based on ethnographic observation of different contexts of work (garbage collectors, seamstresses, mechanic turners) and video recorded interviews, inspired by the self-confrontation interview, in order to understand the mathematical knowledge that is implicit to the different activities. The results show that mathematical specific knowledge has been developed as a consequence of survival needs as well as contexts that favored the development of suchprofessional activities. It was also observed the development or inhibition of cognitivecompetencies due to the social values that encouraged or prevented these activities as a result of gender issues.
