Abstract : The paraphrase is important in the school approach of literary texts but is subject to a ban in their commentary. The book uncovers this paradox, by a historical and theoretical study and by an empirical inquiry about the practices and the conceptions of the teachers. In fact, the appreciation of paraphrase is based on fluctuant and implicit criteria, to the point where any comment can be identified as paraphrase. The author, having identified these phenomena and having presented a multidisciplinary synthesis of the paraphrase, provides an objective definition of the paraphrase as a formulation of understanding and proposes to reassess its role in the learning of writing and reading.
