Entre apories et réévaluation : du territoire au territorial

Abstract : This communication aims to show that the use of the concept of territory as a category of common analysis in diverse social sciences does not help, or not any more, to understand territorial realities. It is no longer an “absolute necessity”. Overloaded, under intense dynamics of dispersion and conceptual stretching, it has become an elusive concept although the term is still omnipresent in the discourse as a necessary substance. Yet this substance, having no other consistency than rhetoric, should lead researchers to caution, to avoid speaking the language of an object “already made” by others, and “already there”. Having discussed some theoretical paradoxes of the concept, we will defend the thesis that it is not necessary to fold territorial objects and processes on a “territory” to give them meaning. We can then evoke the contribution of new approaches such as territoriology and non-representational theories and conceptual revaluations of works of geo-anthropology and international relations.
