Informations territoriales locales et analyse comparative des dynamiques métropolitaines. Le projet Grandes métropoles

Abstract : Metropolitan areas and more specifically global cities are undergoing accelerated dynamics of social, economic or environmental evolutions which call for the establishment of observation facilities, new visualization techniques and new methodologies for linking basic data with different geometries or temporalities. Within the framework of the Local Territorial Information Axis (International College of Territorial Sciences), the “Major metropolises” project has been initiated in order to further explore these issues. It is based on the international comparison of a few study cases, which are likely to sustain inter-axis interactions. In this paper, we first present explorations lying on a “training sample” of 3 cities (Chicago, Mexico and Paris). Having set out the main objectives of the project, we discuss the choice of consistent perimeters and local units for comparing these cities. Then we give an insight into two thematic directions: land use evolution in Paris and Chicago on the one hand, and visualization of demographic structures in the three cities on the other.
